Why should you review your website?

  1. Users judge a website in fewer than 10 seconds - first impressions are vital.
  2. Technology does fail.  Links can break.  Check your website still works.
  3. Search engines give higher rankings to websites which are changed regularly and have strong content & good usability.
  4. Customers like websites which are simple and easy to use. Is yours?
  5. Your website represents your company. Make sure it reflects your brand values.
  6. Fresh eyes can spot the mistakes you’ve missed on your website.
  7. Often, simple changes can make huge differences to your site success.
  8. Improvements can increase the traffic to your website, improve conversion rates and encourage return visits.
  9. Your website is "open" 24/7, all around the world. It is your best selling tool.
  10. The online world changes fast. How up to date is your website?

How should you review your website?

  1. Check your website often - try to find at least 5 minutes every day to spend on your site.
  2. Ask yourself "Is the website easy to use?  Is all the necessary information on there? Do the pages load quickly? Does everything work?  What might frustrate users?"
  3. Check your website analytics - are there pages with very high drop out rates?
  4. Ask friends and family to use the site.  Watch for the "frown" factor. If they frown, something isn’t clear.
  5. Try to get in the mind of the user.  Is there jargon on your site they wouldn’t understand?
  6. Check your competitors’ sites.  Are they better than yours? What can you learn?
  7. Look at the big, successful sites, such as Amazon, BBC, ebay. What can you learn?
  8. Pretend you are looking at your website for the first time.  Look critically at every click, page, element. Use the site differently to how you usually would - you’ve probably got used to the clunky bits!
  9. Work through the whole site. If you have a shopping basket, try to actually buy something - glitches at point of purchase cost you money every time.
